Starsiege: Tribes

Starsiege: Tribes, referred to as Tribes for short, or T1 to distinguish it from Tribes 2, was the original game in the Tribes series. It was a revolutionary game in many respects, and it introduced concepts that other games wouldn't fully utilize for many years to come after its 1998 release. Probably a majority of the fans of the Tribes series believe that T1 was by far the best game in the series. If you only judge each game by its default release, then this is unarguably true. However, mods released for Tribes 2, most notably Classic, changed the physics to be almost identical to T1 and arguably turned Tribes 2 into a much more well-balanced and well-designed game - not to mention the more up-to-date graphics and game engine.

Major Differences moving from Tribes 1 to Tribes 2

  • 2 new weapons: missile launcher and shocklance
  • 3 new grenade types: Concussion, Whiteout, and Flare
  • 2 new basic pack types: Cloak pack and Satchel Charge
  • Some maps now have water. Water will stop most projectile weapons at its surface, and game physics will change underwater.
  • Some maps now have lava. Lava is like water except that it will kill you. Lava has some other properties that makes it differ from water.
  • A heat meter has been added. Jetting will cause it to increase. If it gets too high, you can be a target for AA turrets and missiles. Missiles will continue following you even if your heat goes away.
  • Inventory Stations act differently
  • Ammo stations have been removed
  • Mines don't deal enough damage to kill a light armor on their own
  • The function of the Blaster has been radically altered
  • The Sensor Jammer pack is generally more useful
  • All base assets have shields, though some of them aren't strong enough to prevent much damage
  • Vehicle stations can only be damaged at the station themselves and not the spawn pad
  • Ground vehicles now exist.
  • Aerial vehicles fly more like planes, allowing for enough precision to do loops and fly upside down, though they capable of performing things that you would never see from a real plane.
  • Vehicles now have shields, which are powered off the standard energy supply. They also have a full heat meter at all times (unless underwater).
  • The Bomber and Tank have a second energy bar for weapon usage.
  • Mortar Turrets will now fire at enemies automatically
  • New base turret type: AA turret
  • Base turrets can have their barrels switched out via pack
  • Deployable turrets come in 2 flavors: the indoor spider clamp turret and the outdoor landspike turret
  • Cameras are now equipped to your grenade slot, and can be used as part of your sensor network in certain mods
