Launch and Greetings — December 7, 2008
The Wiki has now been online for over a month and has been coming along steadily. Many key pages have been written, but many more key pages are still on the to-do list. You can see the progress by browsing the site, so I'll move on to more pressing matters.
Since mid-October, a player named Thyth (AKA Electricutioner) has been developing an alternate authentication server. As you all know, Sierra shut down the official authentication server and master server on November 3rd, which made it tricky to continue playing Tribes 2 online. At the moment, your only option is to use alternate master servers and start up Tribes 2 in LAN mode to connect to servers. While this works just fine, it poses the problem of complete anonymity, allowing anyone to play under another person's name, as well as prevent server admins from reliably dealing with trouble-makers. This new authentication server, on the other hand, will once again restore the complete online functionality of Tribes 2, including unique log-ins, and thus correct the problem as well as can be done.
According to Thyth, the project is almost finished. Check TribesNext for updates. We will try to keep this news page updated as well.
