Blaster

The blaster is what you could call the 'default' weapon of Tribes 2. When you first spawn, this is the weapon that you are holding by default. It's an energy-based weapon that fires a small energy projectile in a straight line. It has the second fastest rate of fire in the game next to the chaingun, and doesn't do much damage. It doesn't do any splash damage. The blaster has two unique properties that are the main reasons why anyone uses it: it bounces off walls in a straight path, and it can damage players through an activated shield pack.

[edit] Usage

The blaster is almost never used except in emergency situations. Since it is the weapon with which you spawn, most players will use it if they need to shoot at an enemy indoors and/or around corners immediately when they respawn. Even then, you also spawn with a spinfusor and chaingun in most game types, and in almost every situation, both of those weapons are more effective than the blaster. If your opponent is indoors and shielded, then the blaster is a good choice. If your opponent is around a corner and you are able to bounce the blaster shots in such a way to damage him, then you could try that as well, but if he is unshielded, you are probably better off going at him with the spinfusor or chaingun.

Some players will use a blaster at inappropriate times for various reasons. Such reasons are:

  • They are good at killing people with it and want to show off.
  • They are trying to make their opponent feel bad.
  • They want everyone to think they aren't trying.
  • They are terrible and don't know any better.

I'm sure there are more reasons, but those are definitely the most prominent ones.
